Direct vs Indirect Reciprocity: An Experiment Forthcoming, Homo Oeconomicus

چکیده
In this paper we report experimental results that relate to the reciprocity experiment of Berg, Dickhaut, and McCabe (1995). We consider direct reciprocity, which means to respond in kind to another person, and indirect reciprocity, understood as rewarding someone else. Another variation concerns the information about the multiplier of donations where we compare the benchmark case with a commonly known multiplier to a condition where the multiplier is known with certainty only to donors. Questions which we try to answer are: Will indirect reciprocity induce higher or lower donations?, will donors with the high multiplier “hide behind the small one?”, how do receivers respond to different situations? Network Dependence of Strong Reciprocity
Experimental evidence suggests that human decisions involve a mixture of self-interest and internalized social norms which cannot be accounted for by the Nash equilibrium behavior of Homo Oeconomicus. This led to the notion of strong reciprocity (or altruistic punishment) to capture the human trait leading an individual to punish norm violators at a cost to himself. For a population with small ...

متن کاملNetwork Exchange Patterns in Online Communities Forthcoming in Organization Science
Large-scale online communities rely on computer-mediated communication between participants, enabling them to sustain interactions and exchange on a scale hitherto unknown. Yet, little research has focused on how these online communities sustain themselves and how their interactions are structured. In this paper, we theorize and empirically measure the network exchange patterns of long-duration...
متن کاملHrss Hamburg Review of Social Sciences Informal Institutions: Political Action and the Social and Historical Contextualization of the " Homo Oeconomicus "
Political reforms can be understood as the reconfiguration of formal institutions. The rational choice of formal institutions is the core topic of the New Institutional Economics research program. While bounded rationality is a core assumption of the New Institutional Economics and the reason for suboptimal behavior there, additional reference is made to the individual aspiration to intraperson...
متن کاملThe Evolution of Indirect Reciprocity
Human societies are based on cooperation among large numbers of genetically unrelated individuals. This behavior is puzzling from an evolutionary perspective. Because cooperators are unrelated it cannot be the result of kin selection, and the large scale seems to preclude explanations based on direct reciprocity. Alexander (1987) has proposed that large-scale cooperation among humans can be und...
